Svetilen - Russian vocal group
Svetilen was formed in 1989 to revive the tradition of ancient Russian vocal music which was neglected after the 1917 revolution. The group's repertoire comprises everything from folk music to liturgical works, authentic psalms and spiritual chants. The Svetilen vocal sound has a distinctive character and immediately strikes the listener as essentially non-Western. Though they mainly perform a capella, the music is occasionally accompanied by traditional Russian instruments such as the koliosnaya lira, a Russian hurdy-gurdy, and the gusli, a traditional Russian zither.
